Hackers Show Apple The Future

Friday, August 12th, 2005

It didn’t take long for hackers to figure out how to run the Intel version of Apple computer’s operating system OSX on a PC. Read all about it in the Wired news article here:

I think the cat is out of the bag on this one – Apple has said from the begining that they had no intention of selling their OS for use on a PC, but they may no longer have a choice. If pirated copies of the OS are out there, why not just sell legitimate copies to users instead? This must also be a bit of a horror story for Microsoft.

Maybe consumers will win in all of this – we can have the better OS that Apple makes on cheaper hardware (PC’s) that Apple can’t overcharge you for anymore.

I think this could be a very exciting development indeed.

Podcasts on Sprint PCS

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

Here is the connection that is interesting – A site that streams podcasts to your Sprint PCS phone. Pod2Mob.com offers free software that will allow you to listen to your podcasts on the go.

From the Pod2Mob.com website:

Why is this only available on SprintPCS? The answer is simple, they have the best data package. Unlimited data which is what you want when you are streaming a 45 minute podcast.

In teaching and learning, this could be very interesting – not everyone has a laptop, network connection, podcatching software or an MP3 player, but almost everyone has a cell phone.

“Happy Birthday” – Under Copyright Until 2030

Wednesday, August 10th, 2005

In a column for Wired last month, Lawrence Lessig discussed all the hurdles they had to jump to be able to sing “Happy Birthday” and post it on the web. The story would be funny if it weren’t so sad…

Making the Change

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Welcome to the new and improved Running with Scissors. Actually, the look and feel of the site is improved, not necessarially the quality or quantity of the posts.

The SPAM in my old blogging software (B2 Evolution) just got to be too much – both the SPAM and the time I spent clearing it out of the comment and referer fields. I’m now on the WordPress bandwagon – most of my colleagues are using this system for their blogs so I have a lot of help at my fingertips. WP has a way to control what gets posted in the comments, so it should help me to spend time actually writing posts instead of cleaning out SPAM – at least this is the theory.
