“Professor” Gates

October 13th, 2005

Image of Bill Gates entering classroom at UWMBill Gates from Microsoft made a surprise guest lecture appearance at the University of Wisconsin – Madison on October 12, 2005. The appearance was set up by mtvU – the MTV network aimed at college students, and was also part of Gates’ college tour where he will be visiting several campuses this fall.
From the UWM website story:

“Stand In” with Bill Gates will mark the first time mtvU’s popular series will premiere exclusively on mtvU Über, the first MTV Networks channel distributed in its entirety via broadband, on Tuesday, Oct. 25. The episode will be broadcast the following day on-air on mtvU.

Stand In has had guest lectures provided by Shimon Peres, John McCain, Tom Wolfe, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Elie Wiesel, Kayne West and Russell Simmons.

Gates popped into an Introduction to Programming class and talked with students about the many “exciting opportunities” in technology fields. (Wow – what a surprising message! :) )

Gates also made an appearance later at a student forum – that talk is scheduled to be available via webcast on Friday, October 14th.

I’ll be interested in seeing what Gates has to say in this forum, as well as what the students will ask him. I’m also interested in looking into the broadband MTV network to see what kind of programming they are offering there. (By the way – when I was looking at mtvU Uber – I couldn’t see the video in Firefox – but it worked fine in IE – maybe that’s how they got Gates? :) Of course, it could be I just need the right plugin for Firefox.)
